Producer Profile

Since 1843, six generations of the Krug family have been at the helm of Krug Champagne, but Joseph Krug’s original philosophy remains unchanged: making the very best champagne possible, every year, regardless of annual climate variations. This philosophy and commitment to perfection make Krug the most recognized champagne house in the region.

Krug only owns 30% of the vineyards that produce its wines: Clos du Menil (chardonnay) and Clos d’Ambonnay (pinot noir) are the two principal vineyards they own, which produce two exceptional Blanc de Blanc cuvées. The rest of Krug’s grapes come from long-term contract growers in the region.

The masterpiece of Krug is considered the ‘Grande Cuvée’, a multi-vintage blend that represents the ultimate expression of Krug’s artistry. Krug maintains a relatively limited production to ensure the highest level of quality and exclusivity. These champagnes are remarkable for their ageing potential. Krug champagne is highly regarded and sought after which can make it challenging to get your hands on! On average, a standard-sized bottle (750ml) of Krug Grande Cuvée starts at around £250 on the market. Vintage Krug Champagnes and special editions can command higher prices, often exceeding several hundred dollars, or even reaching into the thousands for rare and older vintages.

The 2006 Vintage is a rich, opulent Champagne. Passion fruit, apricot, tangerine peel and spice all show the signs of a warm, radiant year. All the elements are so well balanced. The 2006 is an especially opulent Krug endowed with fabulous balance and tons of class. Warm weather during the summer yielded an extroverted Champagne that is already quite delicious. There was some disease pressure in August, but favorable weather in September helped stave that off. The rich, dense style of the 2006 stands in sharp contrast to the 2004 and 2008 in this tasting. The 2006 Krug had a tough job following the 1988 Collection, but it performed well. It has an airy nose at first, then reveals citrus peel, apple tart and a slight metallic note that fortunately dissipates with aeration, eventually becoming quite floral. The palate is very harmonious, sylph-like in texture, and quite penetrating, with a surprisingly honeyed, extremely persistent finish. This will mature into a fabulous Krug. As I reported when it was released, Krug’s 2006 Brut is clearly one of the vintage’s highlights. Offering up aromas of dried fruits, pear, freshly baked bread, caramelized apples, honeycomb and toasted sourdough, it’s full-bodied, deep and layered, with superb concentration, racy acids and an impressively tightly wound profile for this demonstrative vintage. I observed last year that this is surprisingly reserved for the vintage, and if anything, that quality is even more in evidence today. While many 2006 Champagnes are likely to be at their best in their demonstrative youth, this is one wine unquestionably built for the long haul. [William Kelley, 15/09/2020]

This Krug Rosé with a fine bubble has a delicate pink colour. Its aromas open on aromas of dog rose, blackberry, red currant, peony and pink grapefruit. The taste gives light notes of honey,... citrus and dried fruit, and closes on a persistent finish. A fresh and mineral champagne with a rich creaminess. Excellent to taste during important occasions in combination with fish-based dishes, but also with white meats, game and spicy foods.
