The story of Bodegas Valdaya began for Brunswick with a meeting with Miriam González in March 2015. The previous month, Rodrigo Calvo of Bodegas Arrocal in Ribera del Duero had been asked if he knew of anyone in the appellation doing something different and special. Rather than seeing another winery as competition, Rodrigo generously put Brunswick in touch with Miriam, and a meeting was arranged in Barcelona the following week, where she agreed to bring samples of Valdaya’s wines.
Miriam’s mother, Elena, was born into a family of grape growers in the small village of Sotillo de la Ribera, in the heart of Burgos and the largest grape-producing area of Ribera del Duero. When Elena married Joaquín González, a native of Barcelona, she joined him in Catalonia, where together they built a successful decoration and construction business.
After many years of hard work, the business eventually flourished, allowing Elena and Joaquín to realise an ambition: to establish a winery back in Elena’s home village, working alongside members of her family who would provide the grapes. The project was intended to create a lasting connection between their Barcelona-based family and Elena’s relatives in Sotillo.
The early years at Bodegas Valdaya were challenging. Joaquín’s generous nature meant that the winery’s grape-growing partners were guaranteed a place and a price for their grapes, regardless of quality. As a result, wine quality was initially only average, and the business survived largely through Joaquín’s determination and sentimental attachment to the project.
A significant turning point came in 2013, when Valdaya recruited young winemakers Marta Ramas and Miguel Fisac. Both had studied oenology at Bordeaux University and developed their skills working in Saint-Émilion and Pessac-Léognan under the guidance of Denis Dubourdieu and Stéphane Derenoncourt. After gaining experience across vintages in Hawke’s Bay, Napa Valley and South Africa’s Cape region, they returned to their homeland of Ribera del Duero to begin their work at Valdaya.
Their arrival marked a new chapter for Bodegas Valdaya, bringing together the region’s old family connections with a modern, international approach to winemaking.
