Claudio Alario

The story of Claudio Alario is deeply intertwined with that of the Langhe itself. Based in Diano d’Alba, the family has been farming these celebrated hills for generations, with roots stretching back to grandfather Matteo, who worked as a sharecropper in La Morra before establishing the family estate in 1963.

At a time when many were leaving the countryside in search of opportunities elsewhere, Matteo chose to remain, convinced of the potential of the Langhe’s vineyards. His belief in the region was carried forward by his son Claudio, who founded the Claudio Alario winery in 1988, producing the family’s first wines under their own label. Today, the estate remains family-owned, with a fourth generation already involved in the vineyards and winery.

The estate’s philosophy is built around a simple principle: great wine begins in the vineyard. Working exclusively with native Piedmontese varieties, the family cultivates Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo across a collection of carefully managed sites. Their Dolcetto di Diano d’Alba reflects the variety’s historic importance to the region, while Barbera and Nebbiolo showcase the depth, character and complexity for which the Langhe is renowned.

Particular emphasis is placed on expressing individual vineyard sites. Many of the estate’s wines are produced from single vineyards, allowing the nuances of each location, exposure and microclimate to shine through. The family is committed to low yields and meticulous vineyard management, adapting their approach each year according to the conditions of the growing season rather than following a predetermined formula.

In the cellar, the focus is on precision, restraint and respect for the fruit. Fermentation and ageing are carefully managed to preserve purity and transparency, with every barrel monitored closely throughout its development. Long-standing relationships with selected coopers ensure that oak supports rather than dominates the wines, while extended bottle ageing allows each release to harmonise before it reaches the market.

The result is a range of wines that combine authenticity, balance and a strong sense of place. Whether crafting approachable Dolcetto and Barbera or producing increasingly impressive Barolo from some of the region’s most respected vineyard sites, Claudio Alario remains guided by the same values that have shaped the family for generations: respect for the land, dedication to quality and a desire to faithfully express the character of the Langhe in every bottle.
