Tucked away in a secluded dry valley in the South Downs National Park, Breaky Bottom is one of English wine’s true originals. Long before English sparkling wine became fashionable, founder Peter Hall was quietly crafting wines from this remarkable six-acre vineyard, establishing a reputation that has earned admiration from critics and wine lovers alike.
Just two miles from the English Channel, the vineyard sits on free-draining chalk, flint and loam soils in a naturally sheltered valley. The surrounding hills protect the vines from harsh coastal winds, while the nearby sea helps reduce the risk of spring frost. It is a beautiful site by any measure, famously described by wine writer Oz Clarke as “the most beautiful vineyard in Britain.”
Peter planted the first vines in the 1970s, initially focusing on still wines made from Seyval Blanc and Müller-Thurgau. Success came early, with his 1990 Seyval Blanc winning Gold at the International Wine Challenge. Yet Peter always believed the vineyard’s naturally bright acidity and purity of fruit were perfectly suited to sparkling wine.
That conviction led to the release of his first traditional-method sparkling wine, a 100% Seyval Blanc cuvée, which marked the beginning of a new chapter for the estate. Since then, Breaky Bottom has focused exclusively on sparkling wines, later introducing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier alongside its original plantings.
Production remains deliberately small, with annual bottlings limited to what the valley can provide. In some years that has meant just a few thousand bottles; in others, crops have been lost entirely to weather or wildlife. Rather than chasing volume, Peter has always prioritised quality, harvesting as late as conditions allow to capture the fullest expression of the vineyard’s unique terroir.
Family, friendship and a strong sense of place run through everything at Breaky Bottom. Many of the wines are dedicated to people who have shaped Peter’s life, from artists and scientists to close friends and family members. The estate itself remains a working smallholding, with sheep grazing the surrounding chalk downland much as they have for centuries.
Today, Breaky Bottom stands as one of the pioneers of English sparkling wine. Rooted in a single valley, guided by patience and individuality, it remains a testament to what can be achieved when one person dedicates a lifetime to understanding a place and translating it into wine.
