Few English wine estates have risen as quickly—or as confidently—as Danbury Ridge. What began as a family project on the rolling hills of Essex has become one of the most compelling names in modern British wine, producing still wines that have challenged assumptions about what England is capable of.
The story starts with the Bunker family, who returned to their roots in Danbury after years abroad. Looking across their agricultural land in the Crouch Valley, they saw potential where others saw limitations. Detailed studies revealed a site uniquely suited to growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the first vines were planted in 2014.
Yet the foundations of Danbury Ridge were laid millions of years earlier. During the Ypresian period, around 50 million years ago, much of southern England lay beneath a shallow sea, creating the mineral-rich London Clay that underpins the estate today. At Danbury Ridge, this clay is overlaid with fluvial-glacial sands and gravels, creating a distinctive combination of water retention, drainage and warmth that contributes to the character of the wines.
The estate also benefits from the unique Crouch Valley mesoclimate. Sheltered by woodland and warmed by light, free-draining soils, the vineyards continue ripening well into autumn, allowing flavours to develop fully while retaining freshness and balance. This combination has enabled Danbury Ridge to focus on still wines, crafting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with both intensity and elegance.
Rather than following the model of large-scale sparkling wine production, Danbury Ridge looked to the great grower-producers and small domaines of Burgundy for inspiration. Significant investment followed, including the construction of one of Europe’s most advanced wineries, purpose-built around quality, efficiency and sustainability.
Environmental stewardship sits at the heart of the estate. An Integrated Pest Management programme minimises chemical intervention while encouraging biodiversity. Sheep graze between the vines during winter, mechanical cultivation replaces herbicides, and grape marc is composted and returned to the vineyard to improve soil health.
The winery itself reflects the same philosophy. Solar panels generate renewable energy, while an innovative above-ground cellar uses passive temperature regulation to create ideal ageing conditions with minimal energy use. Wastewater is naturally purified through wetland filtration systems, and a six-million-litre reservoir provides a sustainable water source while creating an important habitat for local wildlife.
Beyond the vineyard, Danbury Ridge has planted more than 8,000 trees, including a registered woodland established through The Woodland Trust’s Jubilee Woods project. Together with carefully managed habitats and wildlife conservation initiatives, these efforts reflect the estate’s long-term commitment to environmental responsibility.
Today, Danbury Ridge grows Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier, with meticulous clone selection ensuring each variety is perfectly matched to the site. In little more than a decade, the estate has established itself among the leading names in English wine, producing bottles that have drawn comparisons with some of the world’s most respected producers while helping redefine what English still wine can achieve.
