Nestled in the heart of Tuscany’s acclaimed Bolgheri DOC region, Castello di Bolgheri is a historic estate that is helping define the legacy of Italian winemaking. Steeped in centuries of history, this iconic castle and vineyard are owned by the noble Della Gherardesca family, whose roots in the region date back nearly a millennium. Today, Castello di Bolgheri produces world-class wines that embody the elegance and richness of Bolgheri’s terroir.
Located in close proximity to two legendary wine estates – Tenuta dell’Ornellaia and Tenuta San Guido, the home of Sassicaia – Castello di Bolgheri benefits from the same exceptional climate and mineral-rich soils that have made Bolgheri synonymous with top-quality “Super Tuscans.” The nearby Tyrrhenian Sea influences the region’s unique microclimate, while the hilly terrain provides ideal conditions for cultivating Bordeaux varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. In addition to making their own two distinctive wines, the estate supplies grapes that go into Guidalberto, Sassicaia’s second wine.
At Castello di Bolgheri, tradition and innovation come together in their flagship Castello di Bolgheri Rosso, a sophisticated Bordeaux-style blend that combines power and finesse. This wine, crafted with meticulous care from the estate’s finest parcels, is celebrated for its balance, structure, and distinctive minerality. Utilizing large format traditional Italian ‘botti’ sets it apart from its renowned neighbours, while sharing the region’s unmistakable character. Varvara, their second wine named after the Russian wife of a family ancestor, offers tremendous value and has a growing fan club of its own.
At Brunswick Fine Wines, we are proud to feature Castello di Bolgheri, an estate that captures the essence of Bolgheri, elegance, and the excellence of Italian viticulture. Visitors to Bolgheri should make a point in exploring the estate, sampling its wines, and savoring the idyllic Tuscan landscape that inspired poets and winemakers alike.
