Producer Profile

Charles Camille Heidsieck, also known as Champagne Charlie, founded the Charles Heidsieck Champagne House in 1851. It’s the smallest yet best-known Maison in Reims, in the Champagne region. After having a lot of success in Europe with his champagne, Heidsieck decided to travel to the US to introduce champagne there. He was wrongly imprisoned in Louisiana on suspicion of being a Confederate spy during the American Civil War.

Today the House has 30 hectares of vineyards across 60 separate sites which produce 3 million bottles of different cuvées a year. The precise and complex makeup of this hand-crafted champagne has made this the most celebrated winemaking team in Champagne. Its Cellar Masters were recognised no less than twelve times as ‘Sparkling Winemaker of the Year’ over an eighteen-year period.

The flagship cuvée, Brut Reserve, is considered the House’s masterpiece.

The NV Brut Champagne Charlie (Cellared in 2020) is a multi-vintage blend built mostly on a solid foundation of reserve wines. Soft, open-knit and inviting, the Charlie is alluring right out of the gate. Orchard fruit, marzipan, lemon confit, white flowers and sweet vanillin are front and center. Dosage is on the higher side, but it works well in this decidedly old-school Champagne, bottled to commemorate the life and career of Charles Heidsieck. This is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
