Vinous 92

The Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru Latitude from Larmandier-Bernier is a powerful, structured wine. Deep and resonant on the palate, the Latitude packs a serious punch. There is no shortage of depth or intensity, that much is clear. Like so many wines based on the 2015 vintage, the Latitude has a slightly vegetal quality lurking beneath the fruit that is evident but not to the point of being overpowering. Aeration helps that slight vegetal quality in the wine dissipate, although it does not disappear entirely. Dried apricot, sage, fennel, crushed stone all open up in the glass, adding layers of nuance. Readers should expect an imposing, rich Champagne that will be at its best at the dinner table. Like all of the Larmandier-Bernier Champagnes, the Latitude will offer its best drinking if opened several hours in advance. This release is 60% 2015 and 40% reserve wines. As always, Latitude emerges from clay rich soils that confer breadth. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: December 2017. [Antonio Galloni, 30/11/2018]

Anticipated maturity: 2019-2027

Producer Profile

Producer Profile

The Larmandier family has been contributing to the reputation of the Côte des Blancs since the French Revolution: working the vines has been written in the history of the Larmandier and Bernier families since 1765. In 1971, with his wife Elisabeth Bernier, Philippe Larmandier created today’s champagne house by combining their two names.

Biodynamic viticulture is at the heart of their production: they were one of the first wineries in the world to be awarded the Robert Parker Green Emblem for achieving outstanding levels of sustainability. They changed the stainless-steel maturation tanks for casks and wooden vats to let the wine breathe during maturation. They don’t buy any grapes for their production, to ensure only their terroir is represented across their champagnes.

The grape varieties are mainly Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. The wines are aged on the lees for nearly a year, without racking or filtration. Their philosophy is ‘making wines before making bubbles’, which explains the importance of yeast for the development of a good wine.

Larmandier-Bernier is a champagne which represents very good value for money, their Latitude and Longitude cuvées start at around GBP 45.

On the nose, aromas of cocoa, orange marmalade, and biscuits. On the palate, refreshingly contrasting notes of delightful pastry, madeleine with butter, and candied orange that give way to bitter orange, enhanced by a remarkably fresh finish on vibrant citrus and very subtle lemon.

The youthful fruitiness is long gone, leaving a delightfully integrated glass: cream, almond, sherry, mushrooms, a little acid bite, great length which ended on a tiny saline note.
