Domaine de Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier, one of the very few Bordeaux estates to be named Domaine rather than Château, is south of Bordeaux in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. It has the envious and rather romantic privilege of being set in a clearing in a forest, thus benefiting from its sheltering effects from nature’s elements. Despite its secret garden setting, this excellent wine is never far from the limelight.

Domaine de Chevalier is ranked among the Crus Classés for its reds and the Classification of Graves wine of 1953 and 1959 for its white wines.

Dating back to the 18th century, the Domaine was owned by the Ricard family in the 19th century and run by Olivier Bernard since 1983. The Domaine retains celebrated winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt to maintain its well-deserved reputation.

From Domaine de Chevalier’s 35 hectares, they produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot for their reds and from their small production of white Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.

OUR VERDICT
The epitome of balance, complexity, and innate Bordeaux class. The white is arguably the greatest in the region (the Haut Brion duo notwithstanding), and the red wine shows a finesse absent in nearly all its Pessac-Léognan peers.
