Producer Profile
Sassicaia wines are among the most prestigious and
influential Italian wines, recognised for their exceptional quality and role in
revolutionising winemaking practices in Italy.
The story of Sassicaia began in the 1940s when Marchese
Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, a passionate wine lover, planted Cabernet
Sauvignon vines in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany. Initially produced for
personal consumption and a ‘simple vague experiment’, Sassicaia (meaning ‘place
of many stones’) soon gained recognition for its outstanding quality and unique
character. It was the first Italian wine to challenge the notion that Italy was
only capable of producing traditional varietals. The wine showcased the
potential of Bordeaux grape varieties in Tuscany’s climate and terroir; indeed,
it has been likened to the terroir of the Médoc.
Sassicaia wines benefit from a unique
microclimate between 60 and 400 meters above sea level with olive groves,
woodland and hills buffeted by a sea breeze. The vineyards predominantly
produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
Sassicaia played a significant role in shaping the Super Tuscan wine movement,
which challenged Italy’s restrictive winemaking laws and championed
quality-driven, innovative winemaking practices. Today Sassicaia, run by
third-generation family member Priscilla Incisa, is considered one of Italy’s
most iconic and collectable wines, with a consistent track record of critical
acclaim and a loyal global following.
