The origins of Maison Joseph Drouhin can be traced back to 1880 when Joseph Drouhin founded the winery in Beaune, Burgundy. It started as a small-scale operation, but over the years, it expanded and gained recognition for its commitment to quality winemaking. The Drouhin family continues to oversee the estate, and the fourth generation now leads the business.
Joseph Drouhin owns vineyards in various appellations including the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Chablis. They have a total of around 73 hectares (180 acres) of vineyards, many of which are classified as Premier Cru or Grand Cru. Since 1990, they have used biodynamic farming methods in their vineyards, which prioritise the health of the soil and the overall ecosystem. These practices include using natural preparations, following lunar cycles, and avoiding synthetic chemicals.
This estate produces a wide range of wines that showcase the diversity of Burgundy. Their portfolio includes both white and red wines, with a strong emphasis on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The selection includes village-level wines, Premier Cru bottlings, and prestigious Grand Cru wines. The most iconic bottle of the domain is the ‘Le Beaune Premier Crus Clos des Mouches’. The domain produces around 4 million bottles per year.
