Enquiry53% Merlot, 47% Bouchet (Cabernet Franc). Intense but shy, the aromatics revealing little more than a considerable depth of dark fruit. So much density of everything, the fruit generous and pure, the tannins abundant but fine and tightly woven. All bound together in a pretty seamless form. Lots in the glass and clearly huge potential but will require patience. (JL)

Château Lafleur
Château Lafleur is in the Pomerol appellation, only 200 meters north of Château Petrus and Château Lafleur-Pétrus. It produces one of the top-quality wines in the region – although never classified, it easily rivals Château Pétrus.
Château Lafleur was originally part of an estate owned by Le Manoir de Gay in the mid-18th century, which included the current Château Le Gay, before the estate was split in two by the Greloud family (Château Le Gay is just across the road). The Robin family then owned and ran the estate, with André Robin coining the motto ‘Qualité passe quantité’ (‘Quality surpasses quantity’).
Upon the death of Marie Robin in 2001, Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau took over running the estate with Jean-Pierre Moueix, who’s been the winemaking consultant there since 1982.
This famous estate lives its motto of ‘Qualité passe quantité’, since its exclusive output of Merlot and Cabernet Franc comes from only 4.5 hectares of vineyards, which are around 40 years old on average.
OUR VERDICT
Increasingly seen by collectors as having the quality – and status – to rival Pétrus, Château Lafleur is one of the bluebloods of Pomerol. Distinctive blue-toned fruit and minerality is only the half of it. Gradually reducing the percentage of new oak, Baptise and Julie Guinaudeau are now crafting one of the most perfectly defined and sensual wine experiences possible in Bordeaux.
