Veuve Clicquot was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot-Muiron. The name ‘Veuve Clicquot’ translates to ‘Widow Clicquot’, and pays homage to Madame Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin, who took over the Champagne house after her husband’s death in 1805. Her innovative spirit and determination shaped the legacy of the House.

Veuve Clicquot owns and operates vineyards primarily in the Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, and Côte des Blancs regions of Champagne, whose vineyards provide a rich and diverse selection of grapes. Veuve Clicquot offers a range of prestigious cuvées with ‘La Grande Dame’ being their top-tier vintage Champagne, crafted only in exceptional years.

The 2018 La Grande Dame is just as impressive as it was last year. The focus on northern and northeastern sites in Verzy and Verzenay yields a Grande Dame that impresses with notable tension and cut. The nose opens with smoky reduction and subtle creaminess; with more air, ripe lemon and hints of rye bread appear. The palate comes in with real freshness and fine, creamy mousse that... intensifies that slightly flinty, reductive smokiness. The tiny bubbles burst against a textural backdrop and flavour of freshly baked, slightly peppery rye crumb, gently salty.
