Tasting Notes

Limestone and clay-limestone over marl. Not made in 2016. Super-creamy citrus nose but still mineral and chalky. Creamy and with some oak spice on the palate. Generous in fruit but tightly bound up in the structure. Eye-watering grapefruit freshness. Very good intensity. (JH)

The 2017 Bourgogne le Chapitre Rouge was reductive during élevage, according to Pataille, and had consequently been racked in July. It has a very mineral-driven bouquet, more black fruit than red; subtle flinty/graphite scents emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin and a grippy, limestone-tinged finish. One of the most saline and masculine of Pataille’s 2017, but there is a symmetry about it that augurs well for the future.

As readers may know, Pataille’s 2017 Bourgogne Le Chapitre derives from a historic vineyard that was excluded from the appellation of Marsannay because it’s to the north of the village of Chenove, even though it’s clearly a high-quality site. Exhibiting aromas of orange rind, sweet soil tones, wild berries, plums and dark chocolate, it’s medium to full-bodied, with a muscular chassis of powdery tannin and fine concentration. More structured than any of the domaine’s Marsannay cuvees—excepting the Ancestrale—this will really blossom with four or five years in the cellar.
