The 2016 Léoville Barton has a beautiful bouquet of blackberry, gravel and hints of black truffle and pencil shavings, blossoming with aeration yet remaining classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with gorgeous ripe tannins that exert gentle grip. Lightly spiced and wonderfully focused, leaving the tongue tingling with glee long after the wine has departed. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Leoville Barton delivers a superstar nose of creme de cassis, plum preserves and blueberry compote with suggestions of fragrant earth, unsmoked cigars, licorice and cedar chest. Medium to full-bodied, rich and seductive with firm yet velvety tannins, it has a decadently rich finish. [30/11/2018]

Château Léoville Barton

Château Léoville Barton is a 2nd Grand Cru Classé winery based in the Saint-Julien appellation.

Once part of the vast Léoville estate, the name Barton comes from the estate’s historical Irish links. Back in 1722 Thomas Barton left his native Ireland, upon arriving in Bordeaux in 1725 he established himself as a wine merchant. But it wasn’t until 1821 and the change in the ”Droit d’Aubaine” (a type of Windfall Law) that descendant Hugh Barton managed to purchase the twin estates Château Langoa Barton and Château Léoville Barton and the dynasty was born, with the estate remaining in Barton family hands ever since.

Indeed, the two Saint Julien properties enjoy the reputation of having the longest continuous duration of ownership by the same family of any of the other current proprietors in Bordeaux.

With 47 hectares, producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc with an average vine age of 30 years, Château Léoville Barton’s wines are made at sister property Château Langoa-Barton.

OUR VERDICT

The quintessential Englishman’s claret is in fact of Irish/ French origin!  But what a great long-term fanbase this wine deservedly has in these isles. A superior St-Julien that is representative of all that is good about the appellation.  Continues to impress, scaling new heights since the turn of the century as the Barton family forge ahead.
