Producer Profile
The philosophy of Pol Roger is based on two simple words: Excellence and Independence. The house was founded in 1849 and were becoming very famous when, in 1900, the cellar and the main building collapsed. Half a million bottles were lost and Pol Roger’s sons were forced to rebuild everything so that they could restart production. All the while, Pol Roger’s reputation was growing: it was being served in the best restaurants in Paris and export sales were increasing. But this expansion was curtailed by World War I and then by American Prohibition.
Pol Roger’s approach to sourcing grapes is centred around selecting the best vineyards in Champagne. The most common grape varieties used in their blends are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. Pol Roger employs traditional winemaking techniques, including fermentation in stainless steel tanks and the use of wooden barrels for ageing.
Pol Roger produces a range of champagnes, including non-vintage, vintage, and prestige cuvées. One of their most renowned cuvées is the ‘Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill’, created as a tribute to the British statesman who was a fan of Pol Roger Champagne.
