Producer Profile
Giacosa wines are world-renowned Barolo and Barbaresco wines
made by the late, great Bruno Giacosa. These Piedmont wines are highly esteemed
around the world, known for their exacting quality, and their delicate yet
grand complexity.
Bruno Giacosa took over the family wine business after starting to work in the
cellars in 1945. He soon gained a reputation for his wines in the 1960s by
concentrating on bringing the Nebbiolo grape and its Barolo and Barbaresco
wines to the high-end international market, showcasing his dedication to
quality in the process.
Living up to his perfectionist reputation, he was known to meticulously oversee
every stage of the winemaking process to guarantee the highest quality outcome.
From only sourcing grapes from carefully selected vineyards to implementing
traditional Barolo methods of minimal intervention befitting the terroir and
grape, he always took a hands-on approach. He was known to reject below-par vintages
as bulk wines if they did not meet his exacting standards.
He started labelling the Barolo and Barbaresco single vineyard vintages as
‘cru’ in 1964, a first for the region. In the 1980s and into the 90s, Giacosa
started purchasing his own land, acquiring 20 hectares, including parcels that
are considered the finest in all of Barbaresco.
Giacosa is now run by his daughter Bruna, with Dante Scaglione consulting as an
oenologist. Its wines can be considered one of Italy’s ‘first growths’.
