Vinous 93

Medium red. Mineral-driven aromas of red berries, cherry, Asian spices and violet display impressive clarity and vivacity, and a delicacy that is really intriguing. Light on its feet, with deeply concentrated red berry and cherry flavors and a suave floral quality. Silky in texture like a suave Chambolle-Musigny, with excellent finishing spiciness and cut. Tasted at St. John restaurant, this surpassed my initial expectations. A bottle shared over a private dinner, it is a little sullen at first by boy, does it blossom over a couple of hours! Utterly refined bouquet with damson, liquorices and a touch of game. The palate is medium-bodied and still beautifully poised, gaining in intensity all the time with similar notes to earlier this year with white pepper and a touch of bacon fat. Quite plush on the finish but retaining such a high degree of freshness and tension. Great potential. Drink now-2020. Tasted October 2009. [01/10/2009]

Domaine René Rostaing is a highly-regarded winery located in the northern Rhône Valley of France. René Rostaing, a former engineering professor, inherited vineyards in Côte-Rôtie from his father-in-law in 1971. He began making wine under his own label in 1979, establishing the foundation for the estate. René’s son, Pierre Rostaing, later joined the family business and has since played a significant role in its management.
The estate primarily focuses on vineyards located in the Côte-Rôtie appellation, renowned for its Syrah and Viognier grapes. The domain owns parcels in prominent Côte-Rôtie lieux-dits (named vineyard sites), including Côte Blonde, La Landonne, and La Viallière. They also have vineyard holdings in the Condrieu and Saint Joseph appellations.
The estate practices sustainable viticulture, employing organic and biodynamic principles. It follows a traditional approach to winemaking, aiming to highlight the unique expression of each vineyard site. Fermentation takes place in open-top wooden vats, and the wines are typically aged in a combination of new and used oak barrels.
