Tasting Notes

Vinous 97+

The 2005 Léoville Las Cases is one of the most brooding, potent wines of the year. When will it be ready? The answer is not yet. Although I have had other bottles that have been showier. Inky, powerful and potent, the 2005 is a real showstopper. If opened now, the 2005 needs a good 12 hours in the decanter to start performing well. Over time, the 2005 shows it is just at the very beginning of a first plateau of maturity, with lovely aromatic complexity, layers of radiant fruit and tremendous structure to back it all up. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (88%) foreshadows the style that has now become the norm. Time in the glass brings out the red/purplish fruit nicely. Still, I would prefer to give the 2005 a few more years in bottle. The 2005 is a must have for readers who love Las Cases. Tasted two times. [Antonio Galloni, 15/04/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2055

Robert Parker 97

This is a prodigious effort. A blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot and Cabernet Franc (only 37% of the crop qualified for Las Cases), this dense ruby/purple wine has a stunningly pure bouquet of dark fruit, wet rocks, graphite, and subtle background toast/vanillin. Full-bodied, masculine, and very deep and concentrated, this titanic effort is at least 8-10 years away from its plateau of maturity. The Delon family have produced another legend. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2050+. [22/06/2015]

Anticipated maturity: 2023-2050

JancisRobinson.com 16

Dark crimson. Rather a raw, coarse note on the nose – slightly under-seasoned oak? Bright cassis flavours but that rawness again. See my note about the second wine, Clos du Marquis. This had the second lowest average score of this flight. [18/02/2009]

Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020

Producer Profile

Producer Profile

Château Léoville Las
Cases, considered the ‘Latour of St Julien’, is one of the oldest and
largest Second-Growth Estates in the Médoc. Once part of a massive
estate that incorporated Château Léoville-Barton and Leoville Poyferre
back in the 17th century, the
terroir beneath the vines is indeed steeped in history as the estate
was only split up during the French Revolution.

A stone wall encloses the largest plot of the estate’s gigantic 97
hectares, situated between the village Saint Julien and Château Latour.
Its grand gate entrance has become a symbol of all things wine-related
from the Médoc.

Léoville Las Cases has been managed by the same family since the late
19th century and owned by the Delon family since the middle of the 20th
century (also owners of Clos du Marquis, Château Potensac, and Château
Nenin).

The vines on the estate average 30 years of age and produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

OUR VERDICT:

Arguably the first among equals among the
super-seconds.  Don’t allow that to confuse you! LLC for short is so
good it’s in quality (if not classification) terms on a par with the
first growths in many vintages. If asked if the outstanding
quality is great because of their proximity to Château Latour, the LLC
people will sometimes answer
“No, they are very good because they are next to us!”.
