The 1997 Cristal Vinothèque spent 15 years sur lattes and four years sur pointes (where bottles are stored neck-down to minimize contact between the lees and the wine, as well as ensuring a hermetic seal to the bottle) before disgorgement. It has shown brilliantly both times I’ve encountered it this year, unwinding in the glass with scents of sweet citrus fruit, peach, spices, iodine and fresh bread. Louis Roederer inherited this House in 1833. At a time when grapes were mostly purchased from growers by champagne houses, Louis did things differently. Driven by a passion for tradition, he bought several of Champagne’s grand cru vineyards to grow grapes himself. He pushed boundaries when it came to selling his champagnes too: the House of Louis Roederer was one of the first champagne houses to export its products.
Louis Roederer decided to create a very special cuvée for Tsar Alexander II of Russia, creating the famous cuvée ‘Cristal’ in 1876 in his honour. This cuvée helped establish the House’s reputation for excellence. Today, the House of Louis Roederer owns 240 hectares of vineyards located exclusively in the grand crus or premier crus of the Marne. The House is run by the seventh generation of the family, they have stayed true to Louis Roederer’s philosophy, and they remain independent.
They export around 3 million bottles every year. The House sells different cuvées such as Blanc de Blanc, Rosé, and Brut Nature for around £60. The prices of Cristal cuvée are higher and vary according to the vintage and availability, ranging from £240 for recent vintages to thousands for rare or old vintages.
Cristal is considered the masterpiece of the House of Louis Roederer and it is one of the most sought-after champagnes.
