Producer Profile

Château Palmer is a leading estate in the Margaux
appellation of Bordeaux. Despite its ‘Troisièmes Crus’ (third growth)
classification, it rivals its prestigious neighbour Château Margaux and is
considered one of the best wines in Bordeaux.

The estate dates back to 1748 when it was once part of Château d’Issan. The
wine produced here was a favourite at Versailles under Louis XV, and by 1815 it
was considered on a par with its famous rivals Château Margaux and Château
Beychevelle.

The impressive Château on the site today was completed under architect
Burguet’s design in 1860. It has grown and thrived since then under the
ownership of numerous syndicates and families, and is currently owned by the
Sichel and Mähler-Besse estate.

Managed by Thomas Duroux, who was previously at Tenuta Dell’Ornellaia, since
2004, it has embraced biodynamic viticulture since 2008. The vineyard is 55
hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot grapes, and some vines
are over 70 years old.

OUR VERDICT

But for a mere quirk of fate relating to an economic
downturn in its fortunes during the 1840’s, Château Palmer might have joined
Château Margaux as the appellation’s other 1st Growth. C’est la vie – but for
many collectors, Palmer is absolutely their preferred wine of the pair.  A
lush, plush, undeniably hedonistic affair, the wine derives from a much higher
proportion of Merlot in its cépage. An expensive 3^rd growth or cheap
1^st growth – take your pick!
