Clape’s 1990 Cornas is outstanding. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers up rich, ripe aromas of black fruits, licorice, and spices. Superconcentrated, with a full-bodied, highly extracted, mouth-filling taste, this example of Cornas possesses moderate tannin, adequate acidity, and a smashingly long finish. It is also relatively refined for a Cornas, displaying no signs of the rustic tannin or funky, earthy smells many Cornas can possess. Although it can be drunk now, I would recommend waiting at least 3-4 years. Enjoy it over the next 12-15 years. Last tasted 1/96. [01/01/1997]

Domaine Clape was founded in 1879 by Pierre-Auguste Clape. It has remained a family-run estate, with knowledge and expertise being passed down through four generations. Today, the estate is managed by Pierre-Marie Clape, the grandson of Pierre-Auguste, and his son Olivier Clape.
The estate owns vineyards in the Cornas appellation, which is located on the right bank of the Rhône River. Domaine Clape follows a traditional and minimalist approach to winemaking, producing mainly red wines from the Cornas appellation. Notable cuvées include the ‘Cornas Renaissance’ and ‘Cornas’ wines. The ‘Renaissance’ cuvée represents a selection of younger vines and offers a more approachable and early-drinking style, while the ‘Cornas’ cuvée comprises grapes from older vines and represents the flagship wine of the estate.
The wines from the Domaine Clape are often sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for their ability to evolve into complex and captivating expressions of Cornas.
