Tasting Notes

Robert Parker 100

1982 was a great vintage—relatively warm and prolific, producing wines of richness and depth. The 1982 Latour has a medium garnet-brick color and then pow!—it belts out powerful notes of star anise, dried roses, sandalwood and new leather with a core of kirsch, blackberry tart, dried mulberries and blackcurrant pastilles. Full-bodied, rich and spicy with bags of fruit and tons of savory fireworks, it finishes with epic persistence. [23/01/2019]

Vinous 100

From the moment it is first opened the 1982 Château Latour is magical. Deep and still vibrant in color, but showing the translucence of age, the 1982 opens with intense, soaring aromatics that hint at what is to come. One taste is all it takes to confirm that the first impression is spot-on. This bottle, from an original wood case purchased on release, is a poignant reminder of how importance provenance is. The 1982 is simply stunning in its beauty. Vivid, multi-faceted and totally sensual, the Latour captures all the best qualities of this famous vintage. In 1982 yields were high, there was essentially none of the sorting that has become de rigueur, and cellar practices were far less ideal on paper than they are today.  And yet, the 1982 is simply stunning. What else can I ask for in a wine? Absolutely nothing. Except for a hope to run into it again. Well-stored bottles will keep for another two decades, although my impression is that the 1982 is not going to improve much from here. Actually, it can’t improve. This is as good as wine gets. [Antonio Galloni, 03/01/2016]

Anticipated maturity: 2016-2036

JancisRobinson.com 19.5

A bottle brought, along with one of Mouton 1982, by a guest to a grouse dinner – on a Monday night! Absolutely stonking. Beautifully layered, complex, fully mature nose. On the palate there was more sweetness than one usually associates with Ch Latour – a vintage factor presumably – and then a light tarry character towards the end of the palate that resonates with top-quality Pauillac and Latour’s usual mineral signature. Just gorgeous and complete, at the height of its powers. [21/09/2020]

Anticipated maturity: 2010-2036

Château Latour

The legendary Château Latour is a First-Growth estate in the commune of Pauillac in the Médoc region, bordering Saint-Julien. It’s metres from the Gironde River, with a history as rich as its exclusive wines.

In 1331 a defensive tower called Tor à Saint-Lambert was built close to the Gironde as a fortification against the English army sailing up the estuary during the 100 Years’ War. This tower would later give its name to the estate. It was destroyed and eventually reconstructed in 1620 in a circular design, which adorns the labels of Château Latour’s famous wines.

Vines have existed on this land since the 14th century, but it was Alexandre de Ségur and his son – Prince of the Vines, Nicolas-Alexandre – who brought the estate’s wines to the world’s attention in the 18th century. A barrel of Latour was worth 20 times more than all other Bordeaux wines in 1767 and endorsed by Thomas Jefferson in 1787. From 1670 to 1963, the estate was owned by interconnected French families but then went under English ownership with Pearson Group, Harvey’s of Bristol and Allied Lyons. It returned to French hands in 1993 under François Pinault’s purchase through Groupe Artemis (Yves St. Laurent, Gucci and Christie’s Auction House).

Château Latour became the first estate of the first growths to transition to modern stainless-steel vats and today boasts an impressive, innovative and modern winery that rivals its impressive history. Their 78 hectares produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The prestige of the estate is evident in the exclusivity of the wine. A bottle of their Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot averages a cool US $793 retail, according to those nice people at Winesearcher.

OUR VERDICT

Not controversial to call Château Latour legendary. Quite simply a monumental wine in many vintages with a glorious past, present and no doubt future. They removed themselves from the en primeur system a few years back but the wine goes from strength to strength. A pinnace of Pauillac.
