A fine collection of vineyard plots dotting the upper part of the Côte de Nuits, the rich character of Domaine Tortochot has never been in question. That said, the inspired decision by Chantal Michel–Tortochot to work with the ‘Master of Marsannay’ himself, Sylvain Pataille, has been met with tremendous press in both the UK (from Jancis Robinson MW) and elsewhere in Europe. The results, as expected, have been nothing short of spectacular. Fully organic since 2013, Sylvain and Chantal have greatly tweaked the oak regime, using three highly regarded tonnelleries and lighter toasts. 2017 was a particularly impressive year for the domaine, with virtually all of the wines showing really well, their naturally saline and serious nature tempered by an extra shard of bounce and verve. We’d suggest a few from top to bottom – they are, for now, amazingly well priced.
