Based in Savigny Les Beaune and owned by Claude and François de Nicolay, Domaine Chandon de Briailles has been described by Neal Martin as ‘one of the most overlooked and underrated’ producers in the Côte d'Or. After an appalling run of bad luck - hail in 2012, hail in 2013, hail and Suzuki flies in 2014, frost and mildew in 2016 – 2017 saw the domaine finally reaching its marvellous potential. A light touch defines these wines; they are balanced, graceful, and delicate. As William Kelley rightly observes, were they from the likes of Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny, they would be ‘prohibitively expensive’. ‘Shrewd consumers,’ he advises, ‘take note.’ We couldn’t agree more: get in on these sleek, classical wines - before it’s too late.
