This large and old estate in the Médoc – with a heritage going back to 1638 – was once part of the much larger vineyard that incorporated all the Léoville estates, including Château Léoville-Barton and Léoville Las Cases until they were split up in the mid-18th century.

Named after Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferré who obtained the estate in 1840, Léoville Poyferré was rated a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. After a succession of owners, it was owner Edouard Lawton who bestowed Château Léoville Poyferré with its famous label of the demi-wolf, from his Lawton family crest of arms.

The Cuvelier family went on to obtain the estate in 1920 and it has been in their hands ever since. Didier Cuvelier has been custodian since 1979 and along with Michel Rolland (on board since 1995), this Château has grown to become one of Saint-Julien’s finest.

Château Léoville Poyferré’s cellars are situated in the village of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle. Their vines lie in the Saint-Julien appellation of Haut-Médoc, just north of Bordeaux, with 80 hectares of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but they also produce Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

Léoville-Poyferré is perhaps the lesser known of the Léovilles – perhaps in the UK market at least – but under the stewardship of Didier and increasingly his daughter Anne it is no back number. Ripe and deep with exemplary extraction it still shows the cedar-wood complexity of its St Julien roots and continues to be one of the greatest Bordeaux properties.
