This wine kisses the sky… This is a wine to watch in the future… This wine is fluid and more of a shape-shifter.’

‘…enormously charming, aromatic and really quite high-toned wines that still manage to retain the requisite power. A unique, extremely drinkable style of Brunello that will sweep you off your feet.’

Monica Larner on the wines of Le Ragnaie

Dear Sir/Madam,

S’cuse me while I kiss the sky’… there’s an old line not actually written about wine – but quite an exciting line all the same and we were brought in mind of it when seeing the Monica Larner note for Le Ragnaie’s fantastic Brunello Passo del Lume Spento. This sense of excitement actually emerges from the vines’ super-high altitude in the appellation and marks this estate’s ascent to royalty among Brunello di Montalcino producers.

Here we have an intoxicatingly fragrant, beautifully balanced wine. At 13.5% – read that and weep local pretenders – it blows away much of the competition in the realms of finesse, lift and overall beauty.  But this is par for the course with the wines of Le Ragnaie.  All of the wines below have signatures showcasing saline minerality, ‘aerien’ lift, an almost Burgundian mystique and are perfectly symmetrical in structure.

In just over 20 years the initial vines and plantings that Brunello ‘rookies’ Riccardo and Jennifer Campinoti started with have truly effloresced. Starting from small beginnings with some old vine stock the couple have plotted a canny path recognising the perfect high-altitude sites for bush-trained Sangiovese to flourish and have become reluctant superstars with the wines they have made. Not royalty exactly but their wines are up there with the greatest made in the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. In addition to their Le Ragnaie base, they have created different cuvées from organically grown, perfectly situated ‘Crus’ atop or beside the other kings of the region, Soldera di Casse Basse and Poggio di Sotto.  They deserve their place at the same table…

The grapes and their situation are the thing – along with gentle and long macerations in traditional large Slavonian botti – the couple have no shortage of superstar ‘Crus’ to consider below.  The sheer joy of high-toned Brunello awaits – not to be confused with the heavy-hitting styles of some of the critic’s favourites. For those who value aromatic charm, glorious extract and perfect balance – well these are your kind of Brunello.  The ‘Crus’, incidentally do garner the enormous points of superstar wines in the region but from the cuvée ‘normale’ Brunello upwards, you’ll find silk-textured wines with increasing levels of rose petal head-turning beauty.  If they don’t actually kiss the sky you’ll recognise the transcendent style of Le Ragnaie!

2019 Le Ragnaie, Brunello di Montalcino

GBP 300 per case in bond (6x75cl)

‘The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows delicate aromas of blue flower, redcurrant, cranberry and potting soils. It has all the basic components of a classic Sangiovese. Fruit is sourced from across the estate vineyard holdings ranging from 200 to 600 meters above sea level, or the ceiling of the appellation. Baking spice is delivered to the palate with silky, almost glossy tannins. The mouthfeel is extremely fine. This is a very Burgundian Brunello, with 38,500 bottles made. From 2025-2043.’

2019 Le Ragnaie, Brunello di Montalcino, Casanovina Montosoli

GBP 515 per case in bond (6x75cl)

‘The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli has medium-plus concentration and pretty aromas of cherry fruit, redcurrant, crushed mineral, watercolor paint and a generally riper bouquet, certainly when compared to the Passo del Lume Spento. These vines sit at 300 meters in elevation with mixed clay soils (and higher pH) next door to Baricci. It delivers more of a punch, and there is a savory component with leather or mild tobacco that changes with time, eventually transitioning to a point of sweetness. Structurally, this is a very beautiful wine (with 3,800 bottles released). From 2026-2048.’

‘The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli tempts the imagination, blending savory herbs with fresh mint, dusty black cherry and camphor. This is pure elegance on the palate, silky-smooth and supple with cool-toned red fruits complicated by saline minerals as clove mingles with orange nuances toward the close. It finishes surprisingly fresh yet youthfully poised. Edgy tannins add a crunchy sensation, leaving subtle traces of rose petals and an air of worn leather. This harmonious beauty will provide decades of pleasurable drink, yet patience will be required.’

2019 Le Ragnaie, Brunello di Montalcino, Passo del Lume Spento

GBP 515 per case in bond (6x75cl)

This wine kisses the sky with fruit from bush-trained vines planted in 2012 at the highest point of the appellation (above 600 meters in elevation). This is a wine to watch in the future, especially as these vines grow older. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento has a fine and direct bouquet with vibrant red fruit, cranberry, pressed rose and rosemary blossom. Fruit and floral components run very strong, and you don’t get as much of the earthiness that we find in the other wines. Instead, it feels mineral and salty. Crunchy fruit and powdery tannins fuel a very long and polished finish with a contained 13.5% alcohol content. This wine is fluid and more of a shape-shifter. Only 4,400 bottles were made. From 2028-2050.’

2019 Le Ragnaie, Brunello di Montalcino, Vecchie Vigne

GBP 515 per case in bond (6x75cl)

This wine is a star of the vintage. It is made with fruit from vines planted in 1968 in ancient soils rich in quartz at a very high 600 meters in elevation. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V. V. (the initials stand for “vecchie vigne,” or “old vines”) reveals a soulful personality with a very elegant set of aromas and compelling complexity. There is heritage rose, lilac and something earthy like tarragon or marjoram. Underripe cherry and redcurrant are found at the core; however, that ethereal herbal note continues to the palate where it meets a chalky mineral tone. Powdery tannins stick to the side of your mouth for a very long time. Only 4,400 bottles were made. From 2028-2050.’

2019 Brunello di Montalcino: ‘The vintage we’ve all been waiting for…

The current releases from Montalcino are an embarrassment of riches for collectors and fans of the appellation…Frankly stated, finding a 2019 that doesn’t show remarkable balance, vivid fruit and freshness is a difficult task.’
