‘2019 Brunello di Montalcino: the vintage we’ve all been waiting for… an embarrassment of riches for collectors and fans of the appellation.’

Dear Sir/Madam,

The stars from the Brunello di Montalcino 2019 vintage continue to shine with another very fine estate – Fuligni – in the spotlight today. For those who don’t know them Fuligni are one of the big hitters of the Brunello DOCG. The wines here regularly attains a first growth/super second growth level of quality in terms of intensity, polish and personality.

The universally magnificent set of notes and scores that accompany 2019 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino testify to its status. Walter Speller captures the style perfectly in his precis ‘So sleek and elegant and at the same time not short of concentration.’ Michaela Morris perhaps goes further referring to Fuligni as a ‘historic unwaveringly reliable estate’ describing the wine as ‘intricate…with profound depths’, topping it off with a 97 point mark.

We are not prone to ‘points chasing’ ourselves, but we are personal buyers here at Brunswick of Fuligni and the wines have a long track record of ageing supremely well. The 2006’s, for example, are showing beautifully at the moment and the 2019s from this perfectly symmetrical vintage will prove to be a canny acquisition for the cellar for all Italo-philes out there.

There is a rare clarity and precision to Fuligni and yet these qualities are combined with an enveloping depth and richness. The tannins are just what we love about great Italian wines with a soft-graphite, ‘give’ to them – providing great feel and long-term ageing possibilities.

The estate is situated in the classical north eastern sector of the appellation at relatively high altitude and the Brunello is fermented in stainless steel before part of it is aged in 5 hectolitre tonneaux with around 75% of the production raised in 20 hectolitre Slavonian oak. After 4 years this sleek, classical beauty sees the light of day. Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino displays an innate complexity with spice, mineral, herb and floral perfumes giving a long, pure – and memorable – wine experience

The 2019 Brunello from Fuligni will be shipped during June 2024 for onward transfer or home delivery. Please contact us to discuss further, or you can buy online by clicking the button below.

2019 Fuligni, Brunello di Montalcino

GBP 300 per case in bond (6x75cl)

‘This historic, unwaveringly reliable estate does not disappoint in 2019. Graciously expressive rather than austere, it will nevertheless reveal more with time; yet the aromas – a striking fusion of chestnut forest and polished wood with fennel and spiced plum – are just so tempting now. It fills the mouth with lustrous red berries and pressed violets and, after an initial caress, tightly woven tannins amplify across the palate, remaining poised in their volume. An intricate and detailed wine with profound depths. Drink 2026-2041.’

97 points, Michaela Morris, Decanter.com

‘With dark fruit balanced out by savory notes of tobacco leaf or cigar ash, the Fuligni 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is rich and beautifully concentrated. In little time, the bouquet reveals a floral interlude with dried rose petal and a tropical note of hibiscus. This wine shows a lot of angles, all very pleasant, that work together. The tannins are dusty and finely textured with a hint of powdery cocoa to close. Drink 2025-2045.’

96 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

‘Dusty and floral, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino opens with a perfumed blend of dried roses, cherries, mint and lavender candies. It’s elegant and seamlessly silky on the palate, enveloping the senses with ripe red berry fruits contrasted by a bitter clove tinge. A core of brisk acidity maintains a lovely balance as a web of fine tannins saturates the palate, and a pleasantly chewy sensation remains. The 2019 is classic to the core. Drink 2027-2040.’

2019 Brunello di Montalcino: ‘The vintage we’ve all been waiting for…

The current releases from Montalcino are an embarrassment of riches for collectors and fans of the appellation…Frankly stated, finding a 2019 that doesn’t show remarkable balance, vivid fruit and freshness is a difficult task.’
