2016 Barolo is surely destined to be the most exciting wine category of 2020. Brunswick have visited the region for each of the last 3 years and witnessed the progress the wines have made during their elevage and we are not remotely surprised by the buzz in the marketplace for these wines nor that conveyed by the wine journalists – chief among them Antonio Galloni. The originator of the Piedmont Report before he graduated to Parker and launching Vinous, Galloni is undoubtedly the region’s most prestigious critic. His opinion indicates that 2016 is truly something special in this great wine region. We couldn’t really agree more with him as the wines we tasted have uncanny dynamism and definition that sets them apart from other excellent vintages.
Galloni describes 2016 as ‘a vintage full of truly spectacular, breath-taking wines that captures all the pedigree that Nebbiolo and Barolo are capable of’, citing ‘their extraordinary balance and harmony’ and concluding ‘the 2016s are not just epic, they are career-defining wines…. breath taking wines of the very highest level.’ Furthermore, he notes ‘2016 has a ton of depth from top to bottom. So many of the entry-level bottlings are fabulous, always a sign of an important vintage.’
In short, 2016 Barolo is going to be a ‘fill your boots’ vintage at all levels. In the coming weeks we will be offering exceptional wines from the likes of Vietti, Grasso, Fratelli Alessandria, Sandrone plus superstars in waiting such as Azelia and others.
