‘Beautiful fruit with currants and blackberries, as well as notes of walnuts and chocolate. So much blackberry fruit here. Aromatic…’
95-96 points, James Suckling – Batailley 2023

The Bordeaux 2023 campaign begins like a bat out of hell with the speediest set of releases we’ve known. Luckily Château Batailley, the perennial jewel from the northern Médoc, has hit the sweetest of sweet spots to commence proceedings in 2024.

The owners, the Castejas, who have seen it all and are among the more level-headed of Bordeaux proprietors, regularly make this a very good buy and recognise the need to send the right signals in 2023.

So far only James Suckling has reported on his tasting – and while the rating numbers are high, the price, we are delighted to report, is not. It is a Pauillac for the people, you could argue!

We felt that Pauillac was the most successful of the Médoc appellations – those towards the north such as St Julien and St Estephe performed brilliantly. Less rain fell here in the mid-September period so the wines were plumper and more sumptuous than those further south in Margaux, as a rule.

Showing delightful levels of perfume as well as a generous depth of fruit, this is a wine of many components for the money and flows on the palate. It retains its classic blackberry and cassis fruit profile, even bright cherry-infused fruit with chocolate top notes. Below that exists the trademark Pauillac minerality. Château Batailley is simply a beautifully-layered Pauillac in 2023. In common with the best in the vintage, it has a fine structure and a freshness to accentuate the perfumes, as well as that signature of great Pauillac – a pronounced graphite undertone.

It is a magnificent claret to kick off the campaign at a very attractive en primeur price of GBP 162 per 6 in bond. We’re also offering the wine in some collectable special large formats below.

Château Batailley is a ‘proper’ en primeur offer and must be purchased early, because the château closes its en-primeur offer quickly, and increases its price markedly afterwards. The direct château price increases by around 30% as soon as en primeur is closed – last year this happened in May. On this one we urge – don’t dilly-dally – it is a great buy.

Best wishes,

Brunswick Team.
