Located in the southern part of the Burgundy region, Domaine Frantz Chagnoleau - run by husband and wife team Frantz and Caroline – is fast becoming the region’s worst kept secret. Frantz earned his wine growing stripes under Anne-Claude Leflaive and Oliver Merlin, while Caroline was mentored by Dominique ‘Comte’ Lafon. Both have dedicated their careers to pursuing their dream of producing pure, mineral-driven wines, exemplifying the terroirs of the Maconnais. Born of a single-minded commitment to quality, these are startlingly clean wines, full of definition, and retaining a great salinity allied to clean, generous, well-honed fruit. With their St Veran Roche lauded by Stephen Tanzer as so ‘stunningly good’ as to ‘transcend[s] its category’, the Chagnoleau wines - available in micro-quantities only - ought to be fully explored before the domaine’s popularity catches up with its reputation.
