Regarded by Clive Coates as one of ‘the jewels of the Cote de Nuits’, the wines of Domaine du Clos Frantin/Albert Bichot continue their inexorable rise. Now a firm fixture on the ‘favoured few’ list of Burgundy commentators, Meadows, Martin and Robinson included, this range regularly outsmarts the more established elite in Burgundy. Much of this is down to Alberic Bichot and his head winemaker Alain Serveau’s savvy approach, which has time and again seen the likes of Grivot, DRC, Rousseau and Leroy pipped to the tasting post. In the words of assistant winemaker Cyrille Jacquelin, these are ‘wines from the skies not the ground.’ Delightful and intense, and yet possessing a weightless charm, they seem to hover in the air. The less said, the more sampled, the better.
